You Have Questions, We Have Answers

  • What is XEOMIN®?

XEOMIN® is a prescription medication injected intramuscularly to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

  • How does it work?

When you frown or squint, the muscles around the eyebrows constrict and contract. Over time, the skin surrounding those muscles loses suppleness, which results in what are colloquially termed “frown lines”. The active ingredient is XEOMIN® temporarily paralyzes the muscles, which in turn reduces the appearance of the lines.

  • But does it really work?

In two random, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled clinical trials of 547 people, it was shown to be effective. It received FDA approval for the treatment of frown lines in 2011.

  • How do I know if it will work for me?

If you are an adult with moderate to severe frown lines, talk to a doctor about XEOMIN®. If you have an allergy or a previous allergic reaction to a botulinum toxin, XEOMIN® is not an option either.

  • What should I tell my doctor prior to the procedure?

Be sure to go over your entire medical history with the doctor, including any muscular or neurological conditions you may have and any medications you take regularly, both prescription and non-prescription. Also tell the doctor if you had a botulinum toxin injection of any kind within the last 4 months.

  • What can I expect from treatment?

The procedure itself typically takes between 10 and 20 minutes. While no anesthesia is usually used, some doctors may apply a topical painkiller or cold compress on the forehead and eyebrow areas.

  • What side effects can I expect?

The most serious potential side effect is an allergic reaction, which includes symptoms like itching, rash, redness, swelling, trouble breathing, and faintness/dizziness. If you experience any of these, you should seek medical attention right away. In clinical trials, headache was the most common side effect reported by patients. Other possible side effects include loss of strength/muscle weakness, blurred vision, and drooping eyelids, all of which can occur weeks following injection in some cases. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how you’ll react to XEOMIN®. For full prescribing information, please visit here.

  • Will the results look natural?

This is a common concern among patients. Don’t be shy about addressing all your questions and concerns with a licensed medical professional prior to making a decision about treatment.
